TORONTO – Another “swing riding” that is worth watching is York South Weston.
The incumbent, Michael Ford, is not seeking re-election for personal and health reasons. He was the first and only PC MPP elected in the riding.
It had been a bastion of NDP support since one of the co-founders of the Party, David Lewis, was elected there in 1961, later, in the 1980s it leaned OLP until the disastrous elections under the leadership of Kathleen Wynne (2018) and Steven Del Duca (2022), when the OLP garnered 27.8% and 24% of the vote respectively.
In this election, they are placing their hopes of a rebound in the hands of Daniel Di Giorgio, a local Trustee in the TCDSB.
The NDP are trusting in the previously elected Faisal Hussein (2018), the PCs are hoping newcomer Mohamed Firin will repeat the Ford breakthrough.
The riding is one of Toronto’s most diverse, as one can see from the pie-chart and the table.
The Portuguese remains the largest “ethnic” community at 12% of the population with the Italian following closely at 11%.
