No complaints, just viable alternatives
TORONTO – It is not a secret that I held some of the highest offices in the Parliament of Canada as a Liberal. I am not above partisanship. But for many of us first-generation immigrants the exercise was about participation in decision-making. Individual MPs were, at least occasionally, required to present and advocate for platforms and people that both defended proven values and shaped the society to come.
Sometimes it was productive. Local school boards are in search of good men and women to serve their communities in that vein, now more than ever. The Catholic School Boards are facing an existential threat – there are reasons, however slim, underpinning the Minister’s move to place them under supervision.
Yesterday, we published one example of an online campaign by a Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) trustee who appears to have missed the point of her job. She is seeking re-election. Under “her guidance” the Board, under the advice of Senior Staff, took the Board from a Surplus of $100 million in February of 2024 to a deficit of $75 million by year end.
Happily, someone who is gainfully employed and aware of the need for people-building skills is jumping into the vacuum. He is “a tried-and-true hand”, dedicated family man with a social conscience. The Corriere will give him, Gianfranco Cristiano, a thorough assessment on your behalf, going forward
He and his many friends hosted a BBQ as a final encouragement to take on another task. The Premier, Doug Ford and Michelle Cooper, Conservative MPP for the area were there to lend support.
