The CPC: 87.4% “R” Us
TORONTO – The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC)emerged from its post-election convention and mandatory Leadership Review with “impressive numbers” for the party and for this type of partisan meeting. For one thing, those numbers (2,500 +) registered delegates from around the country, on the same weekend as their provincial cousins in Canada’s biggest province, Ontario, held their annual meeting. It classifies as the largest political “rally” with a purpose and consequence- ever.
More importantly, the immediate and most pressing issue – the legitimacy of a Leader “wounded” by defeat in the last general election” – was put to rest. With 87.4 % of the CPC membership standing firmly with the Leader, Pierre Polievre, there should be no further distractions on the question of what issues matter to Canadians. Only some members of the Media still repeat their “mantra”, is it enough?
Member of Parliament for King Vaughan, Anna Roberts (seen below with her colleague MP Michael Gugliemin from Vaughan Woodbridge), was very happy with the result: “it’s what we expected from a crowd that generated an unbelievable enthusiasm”. For her, the convention speech and the results galvanized her caucus and partisan colleagues around the issues of the immediate and long-term future of the country with Pierre Poilievre as its uncontested voice.
“Look, she added, it’s clear we have grasp of the macro issues in Canada, and we will not allow others to distract us from the “micro issues” that matter to our constituencies everywhere in Canada”. Anna Roberts, whose grandparents came as immigrants in search of opportunities to prove their worth and earn a more promising future for their families, said, “I was particularly taken by the themes of hope, opportunity (investment) and affordability. As someone from the banking/finance industry, if one does not secure affordability, everything else approaches the ephemeral”.
Pierre gave all caucus members, present and to come, that intangible connection to what can be achieved by being united, she added. In closing, MP Roberts asserted citing personal history and perspective: “Now that I have added the role of Chair of the Legislative Committee on Canada-Italy Parliamentary Affairs to my Critic roles for Housing and Seniors, I have particular sensitivity for the sacrifices made by generations of immigrants we attracted because of the ethic of reward for merit. Pierre’s speech and the level of support he received points to widespread definitions of what Canada need”.
