Working Holidays in Italy for Young Italian-Canadians
TORONTO – Work-and-travel opportunities in Italy are available for Italian-Canadians aged between 18 and 35 through the “Languages Canada” program, a government-recognized organization under the International Experience Canada (IEC) initiative, which promotes international mobility experiences for young people across various countries worldwide. The program includes the possibility of undertaking a paid placement as English or French language assistants in public schools in Lombardy, particularly in the Milan area, working alongside Italian teachers in classroom activities and language enhancement programs.
The only requirements are, in addition to the age range, Canadian citizenship, being native English and/or French speakers, university students or graduates, and preferably having a basic knowledge of Italian. No specific teaching qualification is required, but a good command of English (or French) is essential, and communication skills suited to a school environment are considered an asset.
Participants will work approximately twelve hours per week in the classroom, supporting teachers in developing students’ communication skills and contributing to cultural and language-related activities. The duration of the program may vary depending on the placement cycle and can take place at any point during the Italian school year (between September and June). Participants will receive a monthly stipend of approximately 700 euros, while travel to Italy and living expenses will be at their own expense. However, some schools may assist in finding accommodation or arranging homestays with local families.
Applications – which remain open until all positions are filled – are submitted online through the official “Languages Canada – English/French Teaching Assistant Program in Milan, Italy” portal. Information and application procedures are available here: https://workingholidaycanada.org/programs/teaching-assistant-program-in-italy/ while the official job posting is also available on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4425277043/
The project is carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) and the Regional School Office for Lombardy, within the framework of bilateral language exchange agreements between Italy and partner countries.
However, Italy is not the only available destination. Languages Canada also promotes international mobility and language training programs in numerous other countries, offering Canadian youth (not only those of Italian origin) a range of opportunities abroad. Destinations include South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, France, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany. For further information on the various destinations, visit https://workingholidaycanada.org/
