We publish a letter, signed by some readers, about our article about the legal challenge to Trudeau’s prorogation of Parliament.
Dear Editor, it is good that someone has stepped up to bat. I think that tying the urgency of Trump’s impending tariffs is a mistake. The Court can easily say that tariffs are completely in the hands of the executive, which they are. Sounds like this case is set up to fail. The real issue is that “he” shut down Parliament for the sake of the Liberal Party electing a new leader. The agenda for the session had not ben dealt with. Nor was there any budgetary shortfall or lack of money to continue until the normal recess. Of course, while the political corruption of the practise has it that these GGs rubberstamp the PM’s wishes, the PM has no authority to shut down Parliament. That legal authority vests with the GG. The GG has no business shutting down Parliament to administratively accommodate one particular political party, especially in a minority government. What if the NDP or Bloc Quebecois had lost its leader and wanted the GG to shut down for 12 weeks to regroup? This is nuts and offensive.
