New People. New Challenges. Many expectations.

TORONTO – If there were ever a constituency representative of the urban “transformative experience” of post-World War II experience, then Eglinton-Lawrence (EG-LAW) would be in contention for top prize.

The main contenders vying for election next Monday are the epitome of “upwardly mobile” nature of its inhabitants. Those inhabitants are characterized by people who faced adversity, overcame disadvantages, contributed to their neighbourhood and [in many cases] moved on.

The constituency boasts some of the best and exclusive private schools, some surviving excellent public schools and several community hubs (centres) that are the envy of many cities.

It is not an area whose citizens tolerate division. Collectively it rewards collaboration and personal success. Many of its repre entatives have found their way into the Cabinet.

The Corriere sat with the top two contenders for office to discuss their personal vision, their curriculum vitae and their aspirations for Canada.

Karen Stintz, former long-serving City Councilor for the center-eastern geographic third of EG-LAW sees an opportunity to apply her experience and expertise to restore the promise the riding once took for granted. “I bring by academic preparation – degrees in Political Science and in Administration – and practical experience to a team ready ‘to do business’ for Canada and our people”.

Vince Gasparro, formerly of the Prime Minister’s Office, Assistant to the previous Mayor of Toronto, member of the Board at Postmedia is also equipped with degrees in business and administration. Recently of Provincial electoral experience, he is “confident in abilities to transform problems into solutions, just as my leader is the steady and competent hand the country needs to move forward”.

Once a hub for military in dustrial complex and post-war settlement of returning veterans it has evolved into an area of the greatest concentration of medical health professionals middle class entrepreneurs. Who ever emerges victorious must certainly be viewed as “Cabinet Material”. The constituency will demand no less.

Corriere reached out to the other candidate, Allison Tanzola, a university student, but was unable to make contact before going to print.
