Toronto School Board Elections: It’s Time for Change

TORONTO – The municipal election will take place one week from today, October 26.

It is time to confirm what works and is right, or to change what is wrong and counterproductive. In Education at least, there is near unanimity that too many things are not working as responsible parents want, demand and society may need.

The Corriere Canadese, relying on the expertise of its investigators, covering several school boards, concurs with the government’s decision to place the Toronto City boards of Education under supervision. In our view, that means that the Supervisor assumes full responsibility for the fiscal mismanagement, the academic shortcomings and socio mental health outcomes of the system that led to Supervision manoeuvre, allegedly designed to correct the problems.

The Corriere has had an easy time balancing the “effectiveness” of some operational decisions by the TCDSB. Few of them, if any, have had to do with life-changing initiatives designed to improve the future of the children entrusted to their care. However, the responsibility has successfully been shifted onto a flock of pliable trustees whose cacophony of compliant “yessir, yessir” invites the harshest of criticism.

If you want your vote to count and be respected by all levels of government and governance involved in Catholic education, be wise enough to avoid the “masterminds” behind collapsing the Catholic School Board as a vehicle for socio-cultural stability and growth: Markus De Domenico, Ida Lipreti, Angela Kennedy and Maria Rizzo.

Corriere Canadese has started focusing on some candidates worthy of election or re-election for renewal: Sara Concordia, Giancarlo Cristiano, Teresa Lubinski, Robert Pella, Sal Piccininni, Susel Munoz Plasencia, Jonathan Santos, Garry Tanuan. Frank D’Amico and Nancy Crawford have been acclaimed.
