TORONTO - Su richiesta dei parlamentari dell’opposizione, il Comitato per la cittadinanza e l’immigrazione della House of Commons ha deciso di incontrarsi due volte di più quest’estate per discutere l’afflusso dei richiedenti asilo che giungono in Canada dagli Stati Uniti.
Il comitato si riunirà entro il 3 agosto. Alle riunioni dovrebbero partecipare Ralph Goodale, ministro della sicurezza pubblica e preparazione alle emergenze, Jean-Yves Duclos, ministro delle famiglie, dei bambini e dello sviluppo sociale e Ahmed Hussen, ministro dell'immigrazione, rifugiati e cittadinanza.
Lunedì scorso, durante una sessione di emergenza, i parlamentari del Progressive Conservative e dell NDP hanno esercitato pressioni sulle loro controparti liberali per intraprendere uno studio che esamina la risposta del governo federale al numero di richiedenti asilo che entrano nel paese e alla tensione che stanno causando in alcune province.
L'incontro è stato richiesto dal critico dell’immigrazione e rifugiati Jenny Kwan e dal critico conservatore Michelle Rempel, entrambi vicepresidenti della Citizenship and Immigration Committee della House of Commons.

Ieri il governo federale ha annunciato lo stanziamento di 11 milioni di dollari a Toronto per dare una mano nell’affrontare l’afflusso di richiedenti asilo, centinaia dei quali sono temporaneamente ospitati in dormitori universitari. Con un comunicato stampa, nel quale si può notare un velo di polemica, il governo ha detto che invierà il denaro direttamente alla città nelle prossime settimane dal momento che la provincia “ha deciso di tirarsi indietro” dalle sue responsabilità giurisdizionali nell’alloggiare queste persone.
In una serie di tweet Rempel ha accusato il governo liberale di gestire male le risorse per favorire i richiedenti asilo e consentire l'ingresso illegale in Canada alle frontiere mentre altri rifugiati sono costretti ad aspettare. “Con Trudeau, il tempo di attesa per entrare in Canada illegalmente dagli Stati Uniti è di zero giorni”, ha scritto.
Il primo ministro Trudeau e Ahmed Hussen hanno difeso la loro gestione del problema affermando che il governo ha un obbligo ai sensi della Carta dei diritti e delle libertà e di altri accordi internazionali. «Questa è una responsabilità legale, non possiamo tirarci indietro, non è una scelta...», ha detto Hussen.
La polemica attorno a questo tema sale sempre più creando spaccature nel paese: la convocazione in piena estate della Citizenship and Immigration Committee da parte dei conservatori ed ndippini, ha tutta l’aria di essere un colpo basso ai liberali.
