Snow melt: Bike Lanes become Flood Lanes

TORONTO – Snow removal season has arrived in Toronto and the GTA. Last year, the city said it would be better prepared for this season. Why is snow removal in a city this far north of the equator always a bigger issue with every passing year?

Technology for snow removal equipment has improved. Snow removal trucks, snowblower and even road ice melt are “more efficient than ever” at quick snow removal. Toronto now has “flood lanes” as well.

You did not know? These are the summer bicycles lanes found in between the non-shoveled sidewalks and the white City of Toronto poles indicating the very few parking spots left for drivers along Eglinton Ave. West, and elsewhere.

Those interested in rushing their pet to the Veterinarian Clinics along Eglinton Ave should bring a skidoo. Parking is impossible to find on the street, mostly because the markings are impossible to find under the black-coloured slush If you are lucky to do so, it’s over $5 an hour. Make sure you wear flood boots as you will need to stand in the river while picking up your pet to carry over to the slippery sidewalk.

The same goes for those attending medical clinics – young and old. Be careful where you step. The cyclists know better. They were nowhere to be seen yesterday.

As for you, Mr. Range Rover, remember that Toronto Mayors past and present detest anyone who owns a fancy car. That river of dirty slush masking its own depth was created just for you.

The Ontario Premier said he was going to remove bike lanes. We are still waiting. This city was built up during the post war economic boom. The vision was to have multi lane roads to accommodate the anticipated rise in car ownership.

Toronto is not like a European city’s core established in the 1400s for pedestrians. Nor is it Amsterdam! It’s time to let go of that idea.

Anyone taking a taxi, uber or even the TTC, between 3 and 7pm should assume that his/her 20 km drive will be a minimum of 1 hour. Every road south of Eglinton has travel restrictions, lane restrictions, and one way directions.

Toronto is fast becoming the world renowned city that destroyed itself. What class! Europe is laughing.

We are approaching election season. Forget continued property tax increases to fix what elected officials and their bureaucrats intentionally ruined. Hire city planners who work and live in the city, and not behind their computers, in some far away secluded community.

We would all love to work from home on a traffic-tolerable road, in some semi-urban areas away from the hustle and bustle that makes our income possible.
