“Toronto Catholic District School Board, there is something rotten”

Letter to Il Corriere from Joseph Baglieri, Lawyer

I read with a great deal of interest Andrea Gordon’s piece on the Toronto Catholic District School Board and its alliance with Villa Charities in a  project that envisages the demolition of an historical and cultural icon such as the Columbus Centre.
There is certainly much rotten when two bodies such as the TCDSB and Villa Charities, entrusted by the community to preserve and enhance our cultural heritage, ally themselves in a project whose ultimate outcome is the  development of the 12 acres of the Columbus Centre campus for private gain.
And it is doubly rotten when a body such as the TCDSB, a creature  of the Province and sustained by taxpayers’ money, spends millions of dollars in a venture that it would see it build a new school on lands to be acquired from Villa Charities for over 20 million dollars, when it already owns two schools and  approx. 16 acres.
Immediately to the south of the CC campus, to which the School Board has added, in January 2017, an additional 3.3 acres acquired at the cost of 18 million dollars from the Sisters of the Good Shepard.
These forays in land assembly and land speculation should definitely be within the scope of the Auditor General.
