TORONTO – Koerner Hall opens its doors to Jazz (with a very Italian touch) for an evening of pure music and entertainment with Stefano Bollani Trio and Roberto Occhipinti Trio. Now in Toronto for a series of concerts, tonight, November 18th, Bollani will perform together with Jesper Bodilsen (bass) and Morten Lund (drums). At the age of six, Bollani knew he wanted to become a singer and would accompany himself on the family keyboard. When he was 11, he enrolled at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, where he received his diploma in piano in 1993.

He started playing pop professionally when he was 15 years old, until he was heard by Enrico Rava, who immediately invited him to play in Paris with him. Bollani is considered to be the most prodigiously gifted pianist on Italy’s talent-laden jazz scene, and this note does not capture the esteem he inspires in his colleagues.

He has worked with American masters Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, and Phil Woods, while Chick Corea collaborated with him on the celebrated 2011 double-piano album, Orvieto (ECM). With no doubts the pianist is an audaciously inventive improviser who draws inspiration from many musical and literary sources, also being a prolific composer with a treasure trove of memorable melodies.

“Bollani relishes the challenge of making a box of hammers and strings into something that breathes and sings” (The Telegraph). Roberto Occhipinti is widely regarded as one of Canada’s premier bassists, with successful careers in both classical music and jazz. He has won National Jazz Awards for Acoustic Group of the Year and Jazz Producer of the Year.

He has also won Juno Awards as a member of Jane Bunnett’s Spirits of Havana and as producer of Hilario Durán’s New Danzon. He performs regularly with many groups, including the Hilario Durán Trio, the Mario Romano Quartet, and Soul Stew.

Friday, November 18, 8pm; for info and tickets: The tickets can be purchased with a 15% discount through the Italian Cultural Institute website,
